Can I claim treatments through insurance?Yes, treatments from Registered Osteopathic Therapists are covered by most insurance providers. Please contact your health insurance provider for a detailed list of your benefits.
-
What is the difference between an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner and an Osteopathic DoctorManual Osteopathic Therapists employ a manual approach to health where hands on treatments are used to adjust anatomical structure and improve functioning and health. This differs from a Medical Osteopath (D.O.) as they use pharmacy, surgery and medical practices in their approach to healthcare. Currently Canada has no colleges of osteopathic medicine, meaning D.O.s practicing in Canada have trained in other countries such as the United States. Therefore most Osteopathic Practitioners in Canada are Manual Osteopathic Therapists.

How does osteopathy work?Osteopathy helps remove restrictions in the body that are limiting our blood, nerve and lymphatic flow. These restrictions can be caused by many things such as posture, trauma, work and much more. When we remove restrictions we allow blood to oxygenate cells, nourish the body on a cellular level, improve nerve conduction and lymphatic fluid drainage. Osteopaths do this by releasing mechanical restrictions found in joints, muscles, ligaments, visceral organs or fascia. The aim of the treatment is to help you move better, because if you move better you feel better!
-
How many treatments will it take to feel relief?Every patient and injury is different and will require different treatment plans. The goal is to see results within 2-3 treatments but additional appointments may be required for long lasting results. Follow up maintenance treatments are recommended.

What should I expect on my first visitYour qualified Osteopathic practitioner will take an initial health history, which includes a form you must fill out. After health issues have been covered and questions are answered, the practitioner will begin an osteopathic structural diagnosis (OSD) before administering a safe treatment plan. During the assessment/treatment the osteopathic practitioner will assess and improve the quality and quantity of movement in the joints and tissues with the use of stretching, muscle contracting and breath work. It is ideal to wear loose or stretchy clothing to limit movement restrictions as the osteopath performs the assessment and treatment. It is also best to avoid heavy meals and caffeine, at least, one hour prior to coming in for treatment, if you have longer hair, please tie it back and avoid wearing heavy/bulky jewelry, as it is often asked to be taken off (removed) during treatment.

Do Osteopathic treatments make your back or joints crack? The Osteopathic practitioner does not intend to crack your back. But thats not saying it won't happen during a treatment. We use gentle manipulation to the muscles, ligaments and facia to effect the bone positions and relive unnecessary tensions on the spine.
